Spotlight: Event Producer Edith Mendoza

From Gossip to Grandeur: The Evolution of Producer Edith Mendoza

The path to success is rarely a straight line. For hybrid producer Edith Mendoza, the journey from writing celebrity gossip to managing high-stakes experiential activations for global brands like Nike and YouTube has been one of resilience, reinvention, and personal transformation.

In a recent episode of Celebrate and Chill, Edith sat down with host Kenetia to discuss the “secret sauce” of a long-term production career and why 2025 was her most transformative year yet. And as we at PopUP CleanUP can attest to, Edith is a first-rate event producer and more than deserving of the success that has come her way.

The Unconventional Start: From Perez Hilton to Production

Most people don’t wake up and decide to be a producer; they evolve into it. Edith’s career began in 2011 after moving to Los Angeles with a degree in journalism. Her first major gig? Writing for the infamous Perez Hilton.

While she spent her days writing “smack” about celebrities, it was the behind-the-scenes magic—the photo shoots and the logistical chaos—that truly captured her interest. This curiosity led her to a fitness production company in 2014, where she moved from social media into producing fitness content for icons like Kim Kardashian and Billy Blanks.

“I’m 38, baby. We’ve been in this for a minute. Back then, DVDs were still the thing!” Edith laughs, recalling her early days in the industry.

Navigating the “PermaLance” Hustle

For many in the creative world, the term “PermaLance” is a familiar but tricky concept. Edith explains the distinction that many newcomers miss:

  • Freelance: You work from home, choose your own projects, and maintain complete autonomy over your brand.
  • PermaLance: You are essentially a full-time contractor (1099). You might work in an office and have long-term contracts, but you don’t receive employee benefits and are still responsible for your own taxes.

Edith emphasizes that becoming a true freelancer allowed her to step out of “survival mode” and into a space where she could curate her career.

The Secret to Longevity: Branding and Energy

When asked how she continues to land top-tier clients, Edith points to two things: Internal Energy and External Branding.

  1. Brand Consistency: Edith advises that if you are a freelancer, you are the brand. Your resume, portfolio, and website must be visually cohesive. “If you’re working with a brand like Nike, they have a specific look. You can’t look like you’re all over the place,” she notes.
  2. Attraction over Thirst: Edith shifted from cold-calling and “thirstiness” to a mindset of abundance. She found that when she prioritized her mental health and self-confidence, clients began gravitating toward her rather than her having to chase them.

Surviving the “Coachella Cough” and High-Pressure Creative

One of the highlights of Edith’s career was serving as the Senior Producer for the YouTube Artist Lounge at Coachella. Managing everything from celebrity appearances to lighting and security in the middle of a desert is not for the faint of heart.

To maintain her cool during these high-stress productions, Edith relies on:

  • Buddhism and Yoga: Practicing mindfulness allows her to be the “grounded mother” of the production when everyone else is panicking.
  • The “Clean Slate” Method: Using YouTube yoga sessions at night to “throw everything out the window” before sleep.

2025: The Year of the Rebirth

Despite her professional success, Edith candidly shared that 2025 started in a dark place. Following a major breakup and the loss of her full-time job in February, she found herself in the middle of a depressive episode while simultaneously remodeling a house.

The turning point? The LA Marathon.

Crossing that finish line wasn’t just a physical feat; it was a mental reset. “It was like my brain chemistry shifted,” Edith says. “I got to that finish line and it felt like a new start line.” Following the marathon, her business exploded, leading to her most successful financial and professional year to date.

Looking Ahead to 2026

As she moves into the new year, Edith has her sights set on a new challenge: The Luxury Space. Having conquered sports marketing and beauty, she’s ready to bring her precision and grace to high-end luxury brands.

With her track record of turning challenges into triumphs, there’s no doubt she’ll be manifesting exactly that.
