It’s fall! A time for Halloween parties, beer festivals, concerts, the only time of year where all three major sports (NBA, NFL, and MLB) are all in contention, and, of course, the return of the pumpkin latte, the end of the year is never not full of great events. Here are some to explore:
Lightbox Expo — Bobby Chiu, the mastermind behind the character design for Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland, created Lightbox as a forum for animators and people who love the art of animation. Held from October 14th through 16th at the Pasadena Convention Center, Lightbox Expo offers educational panels, recruiting opportunities, and Artist’s Alley where you can buy books, prints, and other swag from working artists and animators.
The World Series — The Yankees’ Aaron Judge and the St. Louis Cardinals’ Albert Pujols have made this a year to remember with their chase for the legitimate single season home run record/triple crown and for membership into the 700 club respectively. But this year promises to be even more interesting as the Wild Card round has expanded and both the Los Angeles Dodgers and both New York teams make a run for the trophy. Could we have an East Coast – West Coast or a Subway Series showdown? Or will the Astros upset the Bronx Bombers’ plans and step into the lion’s den for a rematch of their 2017 asterix World Series win in LA?
Concerts — A lot of big names in the pop-rock-rap arena will be floating through Los Angeles this fall. Elton John will spend November 17-20th at Dodger Stadium, Bad Bunny will be rocking out at SoFi Stadium from September 30th through October 1st. My Chemical Romance comes to the Kia Forum in Inglewood from October 11th through 17th right before man-of-the-moment Harry Styles supports his new album with a FIFTEEN NIGHT residency at the same venue from October 23 to November 15th. Paramore, Mary J. Blige, Florence and the Machine, Lizzo, The Who, Nas, and, appropriately for fall, the Smashing Pumpkins round out Angelenos’ options.
AFI Fest — From November 2nd through 6th, cinephiles can pilgrimage to one of the most prestigious film festivals to see small indie films or big studio backed extravaganzas like Guillermo del Toro’s Pinnochio or Steven Spielberg’s premier of his autobiographical The Fablemans. Many past entrants go on to become Oscar nominees and winners.
Comedy — Los Angeles is a comedy mecca, with top liner clubs like The Comedy Store and the Laugh Factory and institutions such as Upright Citizens Brigade and The Groundlings. And this fall quite a few superstars who got their start at some of these venues will be touring through Los Angeles. They include: Chris Rock at the Dolby Theater November 17-20th, Kathleen Madigan December 3rd at the Fox Performing Arts Center, Amy Schumer at the Orpheum, December 10th, Chelsea Handler also on December 10th at the Fox Performing Arts Center, A Drag Queen Christmas at the Ace Theater Downtown on December 1st, and Gabriel Iglesias (“Fluffy”) at the Show for an open run.
Designer Con — Described as “an annual art and design convention that smashes together collectible toys and designer goods with urban, underground and pop art,” Designer Con boasts over 500 artists and is sponsored by big name brands like ebay and Sony Pictures Animation (Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs). Hosted by the Anaheim Convention Center from November 18-20, some highlights include live art, an art show, and a convention floor where you can get Designer Con exclusive merchandise.
And for those who want to be inspired to go high when others go low, on December 13th you can catch former First Lady Michelle Obama on her The Light We Carry Tour at the YouTube Theater in Inglewood to promote her upcoming book of the same name.
