This week we are turning the spotlight on event producer Bianca Lynn Hammonds who our S1 Episode 5 guest on our podcast Celebrate & Chill. Bianca is a true force in the world of events, content creation, and life coaching.
PopUP CleanUP has worked with Bianca on an Amazon Music Live for Thursday night NFL broadcasts, and we’ve seen firsthand the amazing, inspiring energy Bianca brings to every project.
But Bianca is more than just a talented producer; she’s an inspiring example of how to navigate career setbacks, harness adaptability, and use life’s challenges to build a stronger foundation for yourself.
Here’s an unpacked look at her journey—from the world of television to launching major cultural events, and how two devastating layoffs ultimately led her to her calling as a life coach.
From Broadcast to Block Parties: An Unintentional Shift
Bianca’s career began where she thought she’d always be: television. After studying broadcast journalism, she worked on major shows and networks like A&E, Investigation Discovery, and VH1. She was doing “dream” work, excited about identifying new regions for franchises like Love & Hip Hop and Black Ink Crew.
Then came the first curveball.
In 2014, a layoff forced her to re-evaluate. Instead of looking back, she looked at the emerging digital landscape—YouTube, Instagram, and branded content—and decided to pivot. With a minor in marketing, she applied to Complex magazine.
“I’m very much a creature of habit. If I know the product… I’m going to apply to work there,” she shared.
This shift was a game-changer. As a producer on the promo team, the scope of her work became limitless. As long as they could capture a video recap, the possibilities for creating content and, crucially, events, exploded.
This new role immersed her in:
- Nightclub promotions for new TV shows.
- In-store events for product launches.
- Large-scale block parties—all under branded content, meaning she was often working with larger budgets provided by external brands.
The ultimate experience? Being on the team to launch ComplexCon in 2016. This massive trade show was a “bootcamp” that cemented her confidence in event production and proved her skills were highly transferable.
Layoffs and the Search for Identity
The career high of successfully navigating her first layoff didn’t prevent the second, and arguably more profound, challenge.
In 2023, after working at Spotify and earning “dream money,” Bianca was laid off again.
“I didn’t realize how much of my identity was wrapped around the workplace,” she admitted. “I was so used to leading a team, and, you know, hosting this meeting. Now all this stuff is taken away. How do I deem myself productive, or how do I contribute?”
This period of joblessness and self-doubt led her to one powerful realization: she had to rebuild her foundation.
The Power of Vulnerability (and LinkedIn)
Instead of shrinking away, Bianca started sharing her honest experience on LinkedIn. Recognizing that mass layoffs were affecting so many others, she chose to be vulnerable, prompting people to reach out with questions: “How are you going through this? How are you navigating these negative thoughts?”
This visible need for support affirmed something she had been doing for years: naturally encouraging and affirming others.
Finding Her Calling in Life Coaching
Her path to becoming a certified life coach wasn’t just about sharing advice; it was about equipping herself with the tools to truly help. After working with her own life coach since 2020 and seeing the demand for her genuine, direct guidance, she made it official.
“If people are naturally coming to me about these things, I want to be able to really have some kind of certification,” she explained.
The biggest takeaway from the job loss and subsequent rebuilding phase was a profound increase in self-confidence and the ability to set better boundaries.
“I didn’t have the best self-esteem… I was wrapping it all around my job title or the money that I made,” she reflected. By having everything stripped away, she learned what she truly values: rest, clear boundaries, and a foundation secured in her own worth, not a job title.
Bizarre Event Stories: When Things Go Sideways
In the events world, something unexpected is bound to happen. Bianca shared two of the more bizarre experiences she’s had on the job:
1. The Sabotaged Block Party
While planning a five-city block party tour, the launch event in Chicago’s Hyde Park hit a wall. Days before the event, the permit was denied under the bizarre excuse that the performer, Twista, “would incite violence.”
The truth, as Bianca’s sharp, direct questioning revealed, was far more political: a local liaison felt threatened and sabotaged the event. The lesson? Be prepared for community politics when planning large, external events.
2. The U-Haul Meltdown
During an event in New York, a seating error meant the team needed to secure the correct chairs immediately. Feeling immense pressure, Bianca, who usually drove a Volkswagen Beetle, jumped into a massive U-Haul truck with an intern. Overwhelmed by the size and the honking traffic, she drove the U-Haul across a bridge in a moment of pure, panicked problem-solving.
Looking back, they laugh about it—they could have simply called a rental company for a delivery. This story highlights the intense pressure event producers often feel to personally solve every problem, no matter how extreme.
The Golden Takeaway: Adaptability is Your Superpower ✨
Bianca’s journey is a powerful reminder that success is a journey of cycles and re-evaluation. She consistently chose to be a “why not” kind of person, jumping into new spaces and trusting her instincts.
As she put it: “If it doesn’t work, okay, try something else or try it differently. There’s nothing really sad about the moment except for that you said it’s sad.”
The low times are where you build muscle and come out looking like the winner. Whether you’re navigating a career change, a personal setback, or a last-minute U-Haul run, the ability to adapt, learn, and keep pushing is the most valuable skill you possess.
