It’s that time again. Spring is almost here and with it, better weather and outdoor festivals from concerts to beer tastings to yoga and wellness retreats to the return of baseball and the start of the new film festival season. Here’s a round-up of where you can find what along with some larger resources to find out more.
Concerts
Music Festival Wizard has a full listing of all the music festivals across the United States for 2023. Notable this spring are the perennial favorites: SXSW in Austin from March 10-19th; Coachella in Indio, CA from April 14-23rd where headliners The Chemical Brothers, Gorillaz, and Charli XCX will take centerstage; and, winning the prize for best name, the Hogs for the Cause BBQ and music fundraiser for local and national children’s hospitals. This New Orleans rock fest takes place March 31st and April 1st. From May 5th-7th, you can see the Beachlife Festival in Redondo Beach, CA near the Seaside Lagoon. Notable acts this year include The Airborne Toxic Event, Band of Horses, Gwen Stefani, and The Black Crowes. If jazz is more your groove, the Jacksonville Jazz Festival continues its forty year tradition May 25-28th. The lineup has yet to be announced but it starts once again with a jazz piano contest to kick off the three day weekend.
Beer Festivals
Best Beer Festivals gives a run down of, you guessed it, the best beer festivals, including the Gulf Coast Beer and Bacon Festival in Gulfport, MS (but is the beer bacon-flavored, we want to know?); the Wild West; Brewfest in Katy, TX (because, where else?); the Sweet Water420 Fest (I think there might be a tad of cannabis making a guest appearance at this one, don’t you think?); and the Great Alaska Craft Beer and Home Brew Festival in Haines just north of Juneau near Glacier National Park (if you’re looking for beer tasting wit pretty scenery).
Sporting Events
Before the new Major League Baseball season starts, the World Baseball Classic returns from March 7th to 21st with the US Team headed by three time American League MVP and ten time All-Star phenom Mike Trout. Taking place in Miami, Phoenix, Taichung, and Tokyo, twenty countries will face a round robin elimination to find out who’s the best at the world’s hardest sport. The USA will seek to defend its 2017 title while Japan looks to add a third title to their mantel.
From March 6-9th, the BNP Paribas Open will hold court in Indian Wells, CA. And of course, March is the time of March Madness when the NCAA Basketball tournament leads even people who know nothing about college basketball to fill out brackets at work. The Final Four will be held at NRG Stadium in Houston, TX from April 1-3rd.
Also coming this spring: the Augusta Masters, the NFL Draft in Kansas City, the Kentucky Derby on May 6th at Churchill Downs, and the Indy 500 over Memorial Day Weekend at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
Yoga Retreats
If your speed is more Om than Whoo-hooo! then a yoga festival might be the place to tread this year. From April 27-30, the Sedona Yoga Festival, also know as the “Consciousness Evolution Conference,” will commune for the 10th year and offer everything from forest excursions, Ayurveda, Keynotes, Sound Baths, Kirtan, and, of course, Yoga. For teachers, the conference offers workshops where you can earn CEUs. Shops will offer bespoke eco-conscious yoga-centric goods. And the food is all organic, with vegan, vegetarian, keto and paleo options available.
The Bend Yoga Festival in Bend, Oregon, closes out the spring and opens the summer from June 8th-11th. Aside from also offering workshops and presentations from noted yogis like Annie Carpenter and Christina Sell on topics like making asana your own and joint mobility perspectives, the festival offers mountain biking tours, hike and brew activities, and paddling activities on the nearby Deschutes River.
Film Festivals
Sundance, which starts the 2023 season in January, is over, but the big ones are still to come. SXSW, home to more than just film now, with music, comedy, art, podcasts, writing workshops, and more, runs from March 10-19th in Austin. Headliners include Dungeons & Dragons, the Tilda Swinton-starrer Problemista, and Tetris, about the video game salesman who brought this addictive pastime to the world. Next up is the Atlanta Film Festival from April 20-30th and Tribeca rounding out the spring June 7th-18th.
